D-Log to Rec.709: the Conversion, and How to Apply It

Full D-Log is what DJI’s larger cameras record — Mavic 3 and 4 Pro, Inspire, Ronin — and it is a genuinely wide format: more range than D-Log M, and its own colour primaries on top of the log curve.

What a correct D-Log conversion does

Because D-Log carries DJI’s D-Gamut rather than Rec.709 primaries, a correct conversion applies the inverse transfer function and then a D-Gamut to Rec.709 matrix. A curve-only conversion leaves skies and foliage over-saturated, which is the usual reason drone footage looks synthetic after grading.

Both halves live inside the .cube you download, so the conversion cannot be forgotten, applied twice, or stacked in the wrong order — the three ways log grades usually go wrong.

The mistake to avoid

Grading D-Log as though it were D-Log M. The curves differ, and on aerial footage the error shows first in the sky, which clips rather than rolling off.

Grades authored for D-Log

D-Log is not D-Log M. The Mavic 3/4 Pro, Inspire 3 and Ronin 4D record a different transfer function from the Osmo Pocket, and decoding one as the other is why so much drone footage comes back with crushed blacks or a green cast. These six are built for D-Log itself, with the decode baked into a single .cube.

Common questions

Why does my D-Log footage look grey and washed out?+

Because it has not been decoded yet. D-Log stores far more dynamic range than a normal picture profile by recording a flat, low-contrast signal — that is the point of it. A conversion to Rec.709 maps it back to an image meant to be looked at.

Do I need a separate conversion LUT and then a creative LUT?+

Not here. Pick D-Log as your footage type before you download and the D-Log → Rec.709 conversion is baked into the same .cube as the look, so it is one node in Resolve or one adjustment layer in Premiere.

Which cameras record D-Log?+

DJI Mavic 3/4 Pro, Inspire, Ronin — 10-bit D-Log. If your camera records D-Log, these conversions apply to it.

Is there a free D-Log conversion LUT?+

Yes — Neutral is free and is exactly this conversion, at full strength with no watermark. The phone, DJI and Insta360 packs each give their conversion away; they are collected at https://ireelz.com/luts/free.
