Samsung Log to Rec.709

Samsung Log is the Galaxy answer to Apple Log: a 10-bit scene-referred profile in Pro Video on the S24 and S25 series, the S26, and the Z Fold and Z Flip. It looks grey and faintly green out of the camera, and it needs a real conversion, not a contrast curve.

What a correct Samsung Log conversion does

The decode inverts the Samsung Log curve and maps the recorded BT.2020 primaries to Rec.709. Phone footage adds two constraints of its own: the sensor clips early, so highlight handling matters more than on a mirrorless body, and Galaxy skin decodes pink under a curve-only conversion, which is the gamut step’s job to fix.

Both halves live inside the .cube you download, so the conversion cannot be forgotten, applied twice, or stacked in the wrong order — the three ways log grades usually go wrong.

The mistake to avoid

Using a Samsung Log LUT on footage from the standard camera app. Only Pro Video records Samsung Log; the normal mode is already Rec.709, and decoding it again crushes it.

Grades authored for Samsung Log

Six LUTs for the Galaxy S24, S25 and S26 series, and the Z Fold and Z Flip, shot in Samsung Log. Pro Video’s log mode is the Galaxy’s first gradeable format, and out of the camera it is grey and a little green. These bake the full Samsung Log and BT.2020 conversion — curve and gamut, not just the curve — into a single .cube, tuned for a phone: early-clipping highlights, a small sensor, and skin that goes pink under a lazy conversion.

Common questions

Why does my Samsung Log footage look grey and washed out?+

Because it has not been decoded yet. Samsung Log stores far more dynamic range than a normal picture profile by recording a flat, low-contrast signal — that is the point of it. A conversion to Rec.709 maps it back to an image meant to be looked at.

Do I need a separate conversion LUT and then a creative LUT?+

Not here. Pick Samsung Log as your footage type before you download and the Samsung Log → Rec.709 conversion is baked into the same .cube as the look, so it is one node in Resolve or one adjustment layer in Premiere.
